Las Vegas Philharmonic receives CCSD honor

The Las Vegas Philharmonic has been inducted into the Clark County School District’s Excellence in Education Hall of Fame, recognizing the organization for its outstanding music education programs benefiting CCSD students through their annual Youth Concert Series. President and CEO Jeri Crawford accepted the award April 28 at the board of trustees meeting.

The CCSD Board of School Trustees established the Excellence in Education Hall of Fame n 1989 to recognize extraordinary contributions to education. Each year, more than 16,000 at-risk students attend a Las Vegas Philharmonic concert.

Communities In Schools of Nevada honors local heroes

Communities In Schools of Nevada, affiliate of the nation’s leading dropout prevention and intervention program, honored its volunteers, partners and students with the 2016 Power Within honors ceremony May 4.

The volunteer and partner honorees are CarMax West Sahara ­— Community Volunteer of the Year (group); Natalie Manning ­— Community Volunteer of the Year (individual); Positively Kids ­— Community Partner of the Year; Goodie Two Shoes Foundation ­— Community Partner of the Year; Wynn Resorts Ltd. ­— Corporate Partner of the Year; Nevada State Bank ­— Sustaining Partner of the Year; Dr. Lisa Morris Hibbler ­— Civic and Public Partner of the Year

The award for unsung hero went to Noy Thongkham, a CIS of Nevada site coordinator at Rancho High School. Site coordinators recognize students facing non-educational barriers to in-class success and provide the support necessary for the students to succeed.

Special recognition went to Rancho High School principal James Kuzma. Rancho recently made the U.S. News and World Report’s list of best high schools in Nevada.
