Affinity Gaming commits $60,000 to Alzheimer’s Association

Affinity Gaming and its Southern Nevada properties — including Silver Sevens and the Primm Valley, Buffalo Bill’s and Whiskey Pete’s hotel-casinos — announced a partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association Desert Southwest Chapter Southern Nevada Region.

Through donations, events and other initiatives, Affinity Gaming will contribute at least $60,000 in 2016 to advance the progress of new treatments and ultimately a cure for Alzheimer’s and dementia.

$10k to Junior Achievement

Nevada State Bank presented a check for $10,000 to longtime community partner Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada. The presentation was made during the grand reopening of the bank’s Mountain’s Edge branch. The donation will support the organization’s mission of providing financial literacy education to students in the community.

Local runners and walkers are supporting more than 450 elementary and middle school girls at the Girls on the Run Las Vegas 5K Run/Walk, April 17 at Kellogg Zaher Sports Complex, 7901 W. Washington Ave.

The celebratory 5k lets volunteer running buddies and family members help Clark County girls mark their participation in a 10-week character-building program.

Girls on the Run is a nationally recognized youth development program inspiring girls to build self-confidence and teamwork through physical activity. Registration is now open; rates are $35, adults; $15, children younger than 18.

The participation fee includes an event T-shirt, a commemorative 5k medal and refreshments from the Coffee Bean, Rachel’s Kitchen, Crazy Pita and water and recovery drinks from the Coca-Cola Co. For more information, visit girlsontherunlv.org/

class with Boys &Girls Club

Las Vegas rock musicians and brothers Ryan and Adrian Patrick, also known as Otherwise, presented several members of the Boys &Girls Club of Southern Nevada with Eko guitars and hosted free guitar lessons inside Club Madrid. The effort is all part of the band’s new Life By Music Foundation and guitar program at Boys &Girls Club of Southern Nevada.

The nearly 1,400 employees of Cox Communications, Las Vegas volunteered 24,662 hours in 2015, an average of nearly 18 hours per employee. Their achievements nearly doubled volunteer hours from 2014.

Employee volunteer efforts in 2015 included a canned-food drive to support Salvation Army; a pet needs drive supporting the Animal Foundation; and a back-to-school supply drive supporting Olive Crest and Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth.

Cox also recognizes quarterly Community Champions, selected from all Cox employee volunteers throughout the year, and donates $1,000 to the charity of choice for each community champion. Benefiting charities in 2015 included Alpha Men and Divas of Tomorrow; National Junior Basketball League; Refuge for Women and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada.

At-risk schools get 3,500 books

Comedy-magician Mac King visited four local at-risk elementary schools as part of his Magical Literacy Tour: Nevada Reading Week 2016. King held assemblies at each school, reading short stories to the students, performing tricks from his show and discussing the importance of reading.

King also hand-delivered books collected from book drives held in February at Savers of Las Vegas, Harrah’s, Rio, Egg Works, the Egg &I, the Las Vegas Museum of Natural History and Darling Tennis Center. With the community’s support, more than 3,500 books went into the hands of kids in at-risk schools selected by the Public Education Foundation.

Easter Seals Nevada

receives $14k donation

Easter Seals Nevada accepted a $14,316 donation from Whole Foods Market. The funds were raised during a “5 Percent Day” fundraiser, hosted at Clark County Whole Foods Market stores in February. All four stores donated 5 percent of the day’s net revenue to the nonprofit organization. Proceeds will largely benefit Easter Seals Nevada’s autism services, including early childhood intervention, occupational/sensory integration therapy and physical therapy.

Albertsons Foundation

to award $55k in grants

Albertson is celebrating the opening of its store in Summerlin’s Trails Village Center by awarding $55,000 in grants to the Mariachi Ensemble from Del Sol High School ($5,000); U.S. Vets of Las Vegas ($10,000); Nevada Veteran’s Foundation ($25,000); Nevada Veteran’s Assistance League ($10,000); and Catholic Veterans of Nevada Charity Foundation ($5,000).

needy at Rescue Mission

Penta Building Group employees recently volunteered at Las Vegas Rescue Mission, helping to fill and serve 582 trays of food to needy locals. Since October 2014, the general contractor has donated nearly $280,000 to approximately 40 nonprofits valleywide.

AIDS Walk Las Vegas

AIDS Walk Las Vegas will take place at 8:30 a.m. April 17 at Town Square.

The 26th annual fundraiser is Aid for AIDS of Nevada’s largest event of the year. In 2015, the walk drew 6,000 walkers who raised more than $400,000 for services to help 3,000 clients living with or affected by HIV.

Penn &Teller will serve as grand marshals for the 15th consecutive year and leaders of the Penn &Teller Challenge, offering five tiers of fundraising incentives including complimentary show tickets to Frank Marino’s Divas and Rock Of Ages, plus tickets and VIP backstage passes to Blue Man Group. to enhance programs for kids

Boys &Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada and Ross Stores are partnering to support the Club’s Power Hour program, an interactive after-school homework assistance program for members 6 to 18 years old.

Boys &Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada Power Hour program offers youth support in developing a positive attitude about learning and the importance of high school graduation. The partnership with Ross Stores will help to make the program effective tool and give the club with staff training and resources. Local Ross store employees will have an opportunity to volunteer at Boys &Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada. Power Hour is one of Boys &Girls Clubs of America’s top national programs supporting academic success.

Auto association donates

van to Three Square

The National Automobile Dealers Association has donated a new delivery van to Three Square Food Bank. In a ceremony held at Three Square, association Chairman Bill Fox gave the keys to the delivery van, valued at $52,000, to Brian Burton, the nonprofit’s president and CEO.

The delivery van will support Three Square’s mission to provide food to more than 305,000 people who are at risk of hunger in Southern Nevada. Three Square will use the truck for its childhood nutrition delivery route, which includes Kids Cafe and the BackPack for Kids programs, and for its summer food service program, Meet Up and Eat Up.
