Debut of golf event in 2017 to increase tourist traffic in March

A major sporting tournament’s debut in March 2017 could add to Las Vegas’ flow of incoming national and international clientele and compound the already bubbling occupancy rates the city averages during that time of year.

Major Series of Putting is set to produce the largest putting tournament in Las Vegas’ history next year from March 8-29.

The event will be divided into a series of multiple championship events, ranging from singles and team events in stroke play and match play, along with other events for women only, amateurs and professionals. The total prize pool is expected to surpass $10 million.

“MSOP is setting the stage for golfers from all walks of life to experience the intensity and excitement you’ll only reach when you sink that final putt for the win,” said Brad Faxon, an adviser to MSOP and a two-time member of the U.S. Ryder Cup Team with 21 professional victories.

The MSOP organization is looking to gain its champions through qualifying events across North America. The organization is inviting PGA professionals from golf facilities throughout the region to host events through 2016 and early 2017.

Contestants will be able to join specific tournaments through direct registration in Las Vegas after an entry fee. Entrants would then get the opportunity to play on the 20,000-square-foot, 18-hole putting course, designed by Nicklaus Design. The surrounding area will encompass grandstand seating, live leaderboards, a pro shop, sports bar, live entertainment and other features.

In 2015, Las Vegas received more than 3.6 million visitors in March and had an 88.6 percent occupancy rate. This year, the city ran at a 91.8 percent occupancy in March, with just over 3.7 million visitors coming to town, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority data show.

MSOP is a subsidiary of Lune Rouge Innovation, a company inspired and controlled by Cirque du Soleil’s founder Guy Laliberte.

Metro Chamber headed initiative to enhance local economy

The Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce recently led a delegation of almost 50 business leaders, elected officials and public policy experts from Nevada to Capitol Hill in an effort to advocate for several pieces of federal legislation and policies that could impact the state’s economy and job creation within its borders.

The delegation spent a week in Washington, D.C., from June 6-10, focusing on several issues: Interstate 11, particularly between Las Vegas and Phoenix; the passage of the Jobs Originated through Launching Travel Act, which would streamline visa processing for international business travelers coming to the United States; increasing Homeland Security funding for Las Vegas, along with increasing federal grants in the state; and policies pertaining to water in the Southwest.

The chamber hosted its second annual Vegas Night on Capitol Hill event June 7 to build stronger relationships between Nevada and members of Congress and the U.S. House of representatives, along with congressional staff from other states, according to a recent release.

The chamber also hosted an I-11 Caucus reception with members of Congress, business leaders and transportation representatives from Nevada and Arizona. The event’s goal is to brew stronger relations between the two states to help move the project forward, the chamber said in a release.

Besides meeting with Congress members from Nevada and other states, the Nevada delegation was also able to meet with several policy experts from Brookings Institution, American Enterprise Institute, Pew Charitable Trusts and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to discuss cybersecurity, gaming policy, EB-5 funding and tax policy.
