Holiday season brings out the best in corporate donors

Children in need to receive ‘bags of cheer’

Las Vegas Hospitality Association’s Fill a Bag with Cheer program will provide children in need with bags of needed items on Dec. 18. The organization’s members have been paired up with 300 children from Dr. Claude G. Perkins Elementary School. Each association member compiled a holiday bag for their child based on a list of items needed, including shoes, coats, socks, blankets, gloves, hats, jogging outfits, books, toys and clothes. Representatives from LVHA will visit Dr. Claude G. Perkins Elementary School to deliver the bags to the children.

Chefs’ golf tournament raises $15k

Brown Blankfeld Group raised $15,000 during its fifth annual golf tournament at Painted Desert Golf Club to benefit Chefs for Kids. The group, which supports nutrition education in the Clark County School District through the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, works with second grade students in under-served areas teaching children how to make healthier food choices. The organization will serve breakfast at 13 schools in 2015 – almost 9,000 breakfasts.

City National, Barnes & Noble partner for book drive

City National Bank is teaming up with Barnes & Noble for a multi-state book drive that will celebrate the joy of reading and benefit area schools in Nevada, California, New York, and Tennessee. This is the eighth consecutive year that City National and Barnes & Noble have partnered in its holiday book drive. The program is part of the world’s largest bookseller’s annual book drive, which runs from Nov. 1 – Jan. 1. Holiday shoppers can purchase a book at select Barnes & Noble stores for donation. New books may be dropped off at any City National branch. City National’s literacy program, Reading is the Way Up, will match each book donated between Dec. 1 – Jan. 1. Up to $100,000 and the books will be distributed to area schools in the bank’s footprint early next year.

McCarran donates decorations to Opportunity Village

McCarran International Airport executives made a donation of holiday decorations to Opportunity Village. The donation included two 12-foot Christmas trees, 17 seven-foot Christmas trees, two three-foot wreaths, one six-foot wreath and 35 bags of Christmas decor. The holiday decorations will be used at Opportunity Village’s Magical Forest, a Southern Nevada tradition that began 24 years ago.

Nevada State Bank donates to Las Vegas Rescue Mission

Nevada State Bank donated 4,850 non-perishable food items –enough to fill 11 barrels — to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission. The donation is the result of contributions from bank colleagues and the community. In addition to the annual food drive, Nevada State Bank colleagues volunteer their time to serve meals at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission throughout the year and participate in the annual Walk a Mile in My Shoes event that raises awareness of the struggles faced by local homeless.

Foundation’s annual event benefits local children

Sunrise Children’s Foundation hosted its 23rd annual event, “As Seen On TV” Nov. 21 at MGM Grand Conference Center. Sunrise Children’s Foundation takes education into the homes of those who cannot qualify for full day-care assistance, including more than 380 families who are learning to be “Parents as Teachers” and be responsible for providing early education to better insure a child’s success. The foundation’s goal by March 2016 is to have expanded its early childhood development approaches from 144 enrolled children with 18 classrooms to 344 enrolled children with 43 classrooms stretching over 16 locations throughout the valley. The event featured master of ceremonies, Marie Mortera and Reed Cowan of Channel 3, NBC, with a guest appearance by Jessica Moore. The fundraiser included a silent auction, dinner, a live auction, and entertainment including UNLV Jazz Ensemble.

America First Credit Union donates turkeys to students

America First Credit Union donated 50 turkeys to students of Gibson Middle School during the annual Turkey Trot event Nov. 25. Employees of the Las Vegas and Henderson America First branches donated the turkeys to be given to underprivileged students and their families, as well as winners of the Turkey Trot. Students received the turkeys just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.
