McDonald’s program awards $369,000 in scholarships

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Las Vegas, McDonald’s Owner/Operators of Greater Las Vegas, and local community partners have announced $369,000 in scholarships.

The RMHC of Greater Las Vegas Scholarship Program recipients are chosen based on financial need, academic achievement, community involvement and future career goals. A total of 153 high school seniors and 90 college students who were previous recipients have been chosen to receive various scholarships offered through the scholarship program.

The scholarship program has awarded more than $4.1 million in scholarships to students in Clark and Nye counties since its inception in 1999. Local McDonald’s Owner/Operators help raise funds for the scholarship program by donating proceeds from every Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper sold at participating McDonald’s restaurants, and by hosting “Eggs for Education”, an annual fundraiser. McDonald’s has contributed $1.7 million to the local RMHC Scholarship Program.

RMHC of Greater Las Vegas has also partnered with several organizations who have contributed more than $64,000 toward the 2016 program, including 100 Black Men of Las Vegas, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., The Village Foundation LJP, The Links Inc. Las Vegas Chapter, Hispanic Educators Association of NV, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., James and Eva Martin Charitable Trust and United Firefighters Association of Southern Nevada.

Lutheran Social Services to host

anniversary event

Lutheran Social Services of Nevada is celebrating the organization’s 20th anniversary at its annual Wine Tasting/Silent Auction fundraiser. City National supports Veteran’s

Memorial project

City National Bank donated $11,500 to the Las Vegas Veteran’s Memorial “A National Tribute” Project, which is slated to open May 27 with a dedication ceremony hosted by Gov. Brian Sandoval and the Las Vegas Veteran’s Memorial Foundation. The two-acre memorial, located at the Grant Sawyer State Building, 555 E. Washington Ave., features a central bronze vignette of three warriors rescuing a fourth. Four bronze figures serve to recognize the veteran family, and elevated above the central figures stands a pantheon of 10 statues representing America’s past conflicts. The artist of the statues is Douwe Blumberg, an award-winning bronze sculptor who has received more than 200 commissions.

Blue Man Group show supports

autism effort

Blue Man Group at Luxor continues its partnership with Grant a Gift Autism Foundation for the second consecutive year by hosting a sensory-friendly show, suitable for children with autism spectrum disorders at 4 p.m., June 12.

Tickets are $36; net proceeds from the event will go directly to the foundation. The partnership is part of Blue Man Group’s efforts to support autism programs, with a minimum donation of $25,000 given to the cause.

Last year, Blue Man Group gifted more than $11,000 through ticket and sponsorship revenue. Autism, the fastest-growing developmental disorder in the United States, affects 1 in 68 children and 1 in 42 boys.

Ross Stores, Boys & Girls Clubs to

enhance programs for kids

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada and Ross Stores are partnering to support the Club’s Power Hour program, an interactive after-school homework assistance program for members 6 – 18 years old.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada Power Hour program offers youth support in developing a positive attitude about learning and the importance of high school graduation.

The partnership with Ross Stores will help to make the program an effective tool by providing staff training and resources.

Local Ross store employees will have an opportunity to volunteer at Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada. Power Hour is one of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s top national programs supporting academic success.

Mesquite Gaming makes donation

to Make-A-Wish

Mesquite Gaming presented $5,000 to Langston Navarro, a Make-A-Wish child set to graduate from Virgin Valley High School in June, in a surprise Wish Reveal check presentation at Navarro’s school, May 9.

The $5,000 will go toward Navarro’s wish, to attend college at Dixie State University in St. George, Utah. Navarro, who is 17 years old, suffers from end stage kidney failure, and is seeking placement on the kidney transplant list.
