Student teams from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas took home four of the seven awards as well as a top faculty advisor recognition and more than $60,000 in cash and prizes at the 2016 Donald W. Reynolds Governor’s Cup Collegiate Business Plan Competition on April 14.
The Governor’s Cup is designed to encourage multi-disciplinary student teams from Nevada universities and colleges to bridge the gap between technology and the marketplace.
Student teams from UNLV’s Lee Business School and their faculty advisors competed in undergraduate and graduate divisions as well as the Lt. Governor’s Award, a parallel competition for the business plan that best employs clean, renewable, or efficient energy technologies and services.
UNLV’s FRP Innovations – Pyrohalt, a non-toxic and high-performing flame retardant polymer treatment, took first place in the 2016 Donald W. Reynolds Governor’s Cup graduate division.
In second place was University of Nevada, Reno’s MOCCs Technologies, followed by UNLV’s S3B Energy, Inc., an energy storage market solution called Poseidon I, a solid-state sodium battery that uses sodium-rich anitperovskite material.
The undergraduate division, Sierra Nevada College’s TEKTOR team edged out UNLV’s Remmedy Nudge Water Bottle, a water bottle that stores pills such as medications and vitamins, in second, and UNLV’s Adler Dynamics, which employs the use of drones and advanced analytical systems to provide the construction industry with technology that assists scheduling and budgeting, in third.
The Lt. Governor’s Award recipient was Sierra Nevada College’s Warrior Adventure Rapport. The Governor’s Cup Advisor of the Year Awards were given to University of Nevada, Reno’s Krysta Bea Jackson and UNLV’s Dr. Hans Rawhouser, an advisor for UltimateVeganChallenge.com and Adler Dynamics.
Other UNLV teams included Silver State Whiskey, which aims to combine whiskey with robust, culture-based state pride; Tolendo, a social calendar application that allows users to share events or tasks for easy coordination; BzBee, an online platform for businesses and entrepreneurs dedicated to growing and increasing their market share via an advanced matchmaking algorithm and virtual office; CELLA Design, an application created to make interior design easier and accessible to millennials using a 3D spatial analysis of rooms, furniture and an ability to purchase through integrated partner sites; and UltimateVegasChallenge.com, an online-based tool that guides participants through the process of transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle, or veganism.
FRP Innovations – Pyrohalt and Remmedy Nudge Water Bottle will be competing at the Donald W. Reynolds Tri-State Competition on May 25-26 at the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas against teams from Nevada, Arkansas and Oklahoma.
