Cox Business shifts with the changing landscape

Each year, thousands of organizations nationwide suffer from cyber-attacks in a variety of forms and as Southern Nevada extends its global reach, organizations here are ripe targets.

Cox Business, the commercial division of Cox Communications, continues to expand its range of services to meet these challenges head on. This includes enabling organizations to move to the public and private cloud, and leveraging managed IT services, which allows IT staff to focus on organizational priorities, all while employing a robust cyber security prevention strategy keeping critical data and information safe.

Cox Business’ Managed IT services help organizations along their modernization journey. Whether virtual machines, scalable infrastructure as a service, or migrating to a private or public cloud, Cox Business has the expertise and resources to support and enable any organization’s technology goals.

Steve Westerman is vice president of Cox Business, overseeing the company’s commercial business sales, technology solutions and operations in Southern Nevada as well as in Cox’s Idaho, Nebraska and Iowa markets.

He manages some 200 employees focused on commercial services, including business discovery, technical design, and wrap-around account team support.

According to Westerman, Las Vegas is different from other Cox Business markets in terms of gaming, sports, entertainment, tourism, government sectors, large and small businesses.

Hospitality Network is the hospitality division of Cox Business, providing the latest technology solutions to hotels and event centers across the country, including the Las Vegas Convention Center and other large-scale venues on the Strip.

“Cox Business handles clients’ IT infrastructure on a managed basis, as well as cloud services, both private and public,” explained Westerman. “We offer solutions and help our customers navigate when they want to use AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, which helps them reduce costs and leverage processing power they never could before.”

“We also have a sister company that we acquired called Segra, which is focused on expanding our fiber network across our nationwide footprint, while Cox Private Networks and Hospitality Network provide Wi-Fi serves to large stadiums and arenas, including Allegiant Stadium and T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.”

Cox Business is also expanding into AI (artificial intelligence) and machine learning practices to leverage operationalize clients’ businesses and drive more efficiencies.

The company represents small and large businesses in the health care and educational sectors and is developing a long-term plan to ensure these companies have the technology available to meet their ever-evolving needs.

“It is important to me, especially for our 1,500 employees in Southern Nevada who live, work and raise their families here, that we continue to focus on core sectors including health care and education, as both are vital to the overall success of our community,” said Westerman.

He serves on the board of directors of the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance, LVGEA, and enjoys being a member of the tight-knit, strong business community.

Nevada, and in particular Southern Nevada, remains a favorable location for businesses to relocate and expand, which, according to Westerman, is of high importance as the LVGEA, elected and community leaders continue the work to diversify our economy beyond gaming and hospitality.

“From a Cox Business perspective, it’s a tremendous opportunity to offer our services and support to new businesses and we’re excited to be a part of this great community for startups and businesses at all stages and sizes,” said Westerman.

Cox Communications is the largest private broadband company in America and the largest division of Cox Enterprises, a family-owned business founded in 1898 by Ohio Governor James M. Cox.

As the commercial division of Cox Communications, Cox Business, provides a broad commercial solutions portfolio, including advanced managed IT and fiber-based network solutions that support connected environments, unique hospitality experiences and diverse applications for over 400,000 businesses nationwide.
