• Roseman University of Health Sciences President Dr. Renee Coffman has appointed Pedro “Joe” Greer Jr., MD, as dean of the Roseman University College of Medicine.
Dr. Greer joined the University on June 1 with the goal of establishing an innovative mid-21st Century, Las Vegas-based medical school that will align students, educators and community in designing and delivering an inclusive and collaborate environment for learning, health care and research.
Greer comes to Roseman from Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (FIU HWCOM) in Miami, Florida. There he served as professor of medicine, founding chair of the Department of Humanities, Health and Society, and associate dean for community engagement.
“Dr. Greer is a nationally and internationally recognized advocate for health equity by engaging communities to create effective health and social policies and accessible health care systems,” Coffman said. “He brings to Roseman and Nevada remarkable experience and expertise in spearheading the development of unique service-learning and community-dependent medical curriculum that prepares future physicians to address the social determinants of health, while simultaneously caring for individuals and communities through a household-centered approach to clinical care.”
Joining Greer at Roseman are four additional faculty who participated in the founding of FIU HWCOM. Karin Esposito, MD, PhD, will serve as senior executive dean for academic and student affairs; Marin Gillis, PhD, LPh, will serve as senior executive dean for faculty affairs and learning innovation; Luther Brewster, MS, PhD, will serve as senior executive dean for community health innovation; and Cheryl Brewster, EdD will serve as senior executive dean for diversity, equity and inclusion.
The new team will join existing College of Medicine leadership that includes Bruce Morgenstern, MD, senior executive dean for clinical affairs; Thomas Hunt, MD, chair of family and community medicine and associate dean for clinical education; Kristina Connolly, assistant dean for finance and administration; and Victoria VanMeetren, special advisor to the dean.
The College of Medicine leadership will establish a community-dependent approach to improve the lives of Nevadans through the creation of innovative medical education curriculum, aggressive student pipeline development, commitment to diversity and inclusion, and focus on household-centered care.
NON PROFIT
• The Las Vegas Philharmonic has announced that three new members have been appointed to the board of trustees. Amber Fontaine, Ellen Richards and Lia Roberts were voted in unanimously at the May 19 annual meeting. Each of the new trustees bring a vast amount of expertise spanning arts and culture leadership, health care executive leadership and human resources management. These appointments represent an exciting expansion to the existing board of dedicated professionals.
LVP’s Chairman Jeri Crawford said: “We are experiencing an exciting period of evolution in the organization today and part of that includes bringing on additional leadership united by a collective purpose that we believe will sustain live symphonic music for all of Southern Nevada for years to come.”
Executive Director Lacey Huszcza added: “I am so thrilled that these three dynamic and accomplished women are joining our already dedicated and exceptional board of trustees. The leadership at the Philharmonic is fabulous and continues to invest in the city of Las Vegas and the power of arts to connect and build our community.”
— Fontaine is human resources manager for Findlay Automotive Group, servicing some 32 (and growing) dealerships in multiple states. Her expertise lies in personnel/team best practices, policy and procedures, employment law and development of training curriculum. Fontaine relocated to Las Vegas in 2009. She also teaches Barre and Vinyasa Flow and has a great passion for wellness and mindfulness programs, particularly where they intersect with arts and culture.
— Richards is an independent health care consultant, with clinical and management skills developed over 40 years in clinical informatics, quality, population health and performance improvement consulting. Her experience includes multiple disciplines in nonprofit and for-profit health systems. She and her husband, George (a retired executive), relocated to Las Vegas in 2014 and are avid supporters of the arts and enjoy the outdoors.
— Roberts is a Romanian and American politician. Born in Bucharest, she graduated in 1972 from the University of Bucharest with a degree in geology and a master’s degree in geotechnical engineering. Roberts emigrated from Communist Romania in 1979, married and settled in Las Vegas. She got involved in politics after arriving in the U.S. and spent over 40 years serving on political campaigns for the likes of former Nevada governors, Jim Gibbons and Kenny Guinn along with former U.S. presidents, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush. Roberts serves as honorary consul for the Romanian Consulate and was appointed to the Nevada Commission for Nuclear Projects by Gov. Steve Sisolak in 2019. She has been a longtime supporter of the LVP and many other arts organizations, championing a strong culture — community connection.
REAL ESTATE
• The Institute of Real Estate Management nominating committee announced its 2021 slate of IREM officers, including candidate, IREM Chapter 99 Las Vegas’ past president, Angelina Scarcelli, CPM, CCIM, Colliers International, AMO Las Vegas, as the 2021-2022 term, regional vice president.
The role with the two-year term, begins at the conclusion of the 2020 annual IREM meeting through the conclusion of the 2022 annual IREM meeting. Newly elected officers will serve with 2021 President W.A. “Chip” Watts IV, CPM, CCIM, of Watts Realty Co. Inc., AMO, in Birmingham, Alabama.
Formerly, past president of IREM Chapter 99 Las Vegas, Scarcelli serves as the director of operations for property management at the Las Vegas office of Colliers International. Recently obtaining the Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) designation from CCIM Institute. Scarcelli was among the 228 commercial real estate professionals who earned the designation by passing CCIM Institute’s comprehensive examination, the capstone element in the designation process.
The election of IREM officers and regional vice presidents, including IREM Chapter 99 Vegas’ officer, Scarcelli, will take place at the Governing Council meeting held in conjunction with the IREM Global Summit in Toronto, on Oct. 23, 2020.
