Frey Ranch Distillery — one of the only true farm-to-glass American Whiskey brands — announced the launch of Frey Ranch Five Grain Single Barrel Bourbon. A rarity in the whiskey world, this is the first-ever release from Frey Ranch that features all five of the grains distilled together — corn, wheat, barley, rye and the special addition of oat — that whiskey farmer Colby Frey grows exclusively on his farm. With his farming acumen, Colby plants and harvest grains that are specifically destined to become whiskey, and the introduction of this bourbon is a chance to showcase how all five whiskey grains work together in harmony.
“Oats are notoriously difficult to distill, but (master distiller) Russell Wedlake and I love a challenge. Oat is 60 percent hulls by volume and low on starch, which is problematic for a whiskey maker, as the hulls plug up the stills and the low starch means a lower yield per barrel. For this release, we have less than 350 bottles in total that are available for purchase both online and in the Tasting Room, so these are definitely a get ‘em while they’re hot commodity,” Colby said.
A truly unique and experimental whiskey that will beguile more experienced and versatile whiskey fans with its cask strength proof and tantalizing taste profile, the mash bill for Frey Ranch Five Grain Bourbon is a lesson in both balance and precision. It features 60 percent corn, 10 percent wheat, 10 percent rye, 10 percent malted barley and 10 percent oat.
At a whopping 130.24 proof, Barrel No. 3016 was aged for six years, two months, and 1½ days. An aromatic delight, the nose offers caramel apples and Fun Dip candy, while the palate presents a creamy texture of oats and milk chocolate. The finish is reminiscent of grandma’s frosted oatmeal cookies. A luxurious sipping whiskey, only 186 bottles are available for purchase online starting July 18 at Shop.FreyRanch.com.
Aged for six years, two months and 2½ days, Barrel No. 3011 packs a heavyweight punch with a cask strength proof of 133.22. A feast for the senses, on the nose the whiskey delivers notes of rose petals mixed with jelly donuts. With fruitcake on the palate and a finish of rich and creamy dark and malted chocolate, the bourbon strikes a beautiful balance with the combination of its sweet taste profile and extra heat from the high proof. Only 156 bottles are available for purchase in the Frey Ranch Tasting Room beginning July 19.
The Frey family values a common-sense approach to sustainable farming, with Colby’s inspiration to build a distillery born from a desire to create a distinctive, long-lasting product from the quality grains his family has been growing and perfecting for generations. The family has long abided by the “Be good to the land and the land will be good to you,” which is engraved on the bottom of each bottle of Frey Ranch whiskey.
Frey Ranch will release two barrels of its Five Grain Single Barrel Bourbon. Bottles sell for $89 for a 750ml.
