SBA to help over-50 entrepreneurs

The Small Business Administration Nevada District Office’s latest initiative targets the entrepreneur over the age of 50.

On Aug. 27, the SBA will host, “Exclusive for the 50+ Encore Entrepreneur: Getting Started in Business,” which will highlight the requirements of starting a small business, how to effectively use your life experiences and career for your business as well as what resources are available.

“We’ve had many different initiatives including assisting veterans and women-owned businesses,” said Robert Holguin, district director of the Nevada District. “We’ve seen an uptick in more people over 50 starting their own business so we want to be able to provide them the resources they need.”

According to Holguin, there are many reasons that people over 50 are deciding to open their own small business.

“They’re realizing that they don’t have enough money after retirement so they’re seeking additional sources of income,” he said. “Also, not everyone is ready to retire so they’re seeking something else to do with their life and they also don’t want to work for someone else so they’re trying it out.”

The event keynote speaker is Shaundell Newsome, owner of Las Vegas-based Sumnu Marketing.

“Shaundell is one of our trainers; he’s taught several programs with our resource partners,” Holguin said. “He’s also over 50 and well respected in the community.”

Regardless of age, Holguin added that the SBA is always available for current or prospective small business owners.

“We’re always seeking ways to reach out to those starting a small business and provide the support they need,” he said.

The free event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 27 at the SBA office, 300 S. Fourth St., Suite. 400, Las Vegas.
