Sam Nicholson, president/founder of Grand Canyon Development Partners

Q: What are you reading?

A: My reading list will likely make me sound like a pretty boring guy. I am currently reading Patrick Lencioni’s book: “The Ideal Team Player,” a business book on how to recognize and cultivate the virtues of a team player. I am particularly fond of all his books and have used the information extensively in our business. Aside from that, I listen to a variety of audio books while commuting or traveling.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant?

A: Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse in Summerlin is my favorite restaurant in Las Vegas. I appreciate the personal service we always receive there, the owner or manager always stops by the table to chat and verify that the service was excellent.

Q: Where do you take clients to dinner?

A: I generally take clients to the restaurant of their choosing, regardless of the type of food or location. It’s still about making sure they are happy and comfortable.

Q: Where do you workout or play your favorite sport?

A: Tennis is still my favorite personal sport. Although it’s getting more difficult to play as well as I once did when I was younger.

Q: How do you decompress after a hard week?

A: Decompression comes in many forms for me. I take long rides on my motorcycle, start a new drawing or painting or, if time is limited, just getting comfortable with a good movie and family.

Q: What is the biggest challenge facing Las Vegas in the next five years.

A: This is a difficult question to answer. In my opinion, Las Vegas, like many other growing cities, faces multiple challenges that are in need of constant attention. They vary from diversification of our economy so we can better weather the economic slowdowns, unemployment, homelessness, potential water shortages and education, to name a few. All of which require focused attention to keep the community healthy and to foster its ability to attract strong new industries.
