Mary Mazur is the new president and general manager ofVegas PBS. Mazur is an award-winning television executive with more than 30 years of experience in commercial and public media, most recently served as the general manager of Arizona PBS.
Q: What are you reading?
A: I’m just finishing “2034: A Novel of the Next World War” by Admiral Stavridis, former Supreme Allied Commander at NATO. It is a cautionary tale that reads like a thriller, with wonderfully drawn characters. Admiral Stavridis makes the point that some of our greatest disasters — Pearl Harbor, 9/11 — were not as much failures of intelligence, but rather failures of imagination. We didn’t imagine such things and therefore we didn’t prepare accordingly. Imagining the possibilities — best- and worst-case scenarios is critical for anyone in a leadership role. Imagining the possibilities for Vegas PBS and its ability to contribute in this post-pandemic world is a series of best-case scenarios that are always on my mind.
Q: What is your favorite restaurant or place to take clients?
A: Having moved here in January I haven’t yet had the opportunity to take out clients, but my husband and I have found a lot of wonderful spots for dinner, including Marche Bacchus and Americana Restaurant. Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to finding my special lunch place really soon.
Q: How do you decompress after a long week?
A: My husband and I are exploring our new neighborhood, and, for now, decompressing means settling into our house and “getting outdoors” means local garden shops.
Q: What do you do to workout?
A: I practice Bikram Yoga four to five times a week and am so happy to have found Vegas Yoga. It is a wonderful studio that already feels like home.
Q: What is the biggest challenge facing Southern Nevada?
A: As I learn about my new state, I see tremendous opportunity. I am particularly enthusiastic about Vegas PBS’s capacity to play an important role in new technologies, statewide interconnection, and support distance learning and workforce development. These are all areas we have been working on for years and we are poised to take a leadership role in these important initiatives.
