The Hirschi family has a Las Vegas business legacy that dates back to the 1980s, starting with Bill Hirschi.
Today, his son, Chad, and Chad’s wife, Crystal, play a major role in the valley’s construction industry through their family of companies, Hirschi Companies, Hirschi Masonry, Hirschi Trucking, Hirschi Iron and Hirschi Powder Coating.
Chad began his career in his father’s masonry business, where he held several roles until the company was sold in 2006. After the sale, Chad continued to manage day-to-day operations for the new owners, The Masonry Group, until it closed its doors in 2009 due to the impact of the Great Recession.
In December 2009, Chad and Crystal launched Hirschi Masonry, focusing on residential masonry work for the valley’s major homebuilders. The company specialized in construction of all types of block walls, retaining walls, rock walls and all types of stone and brick veneer work.
“As the economy improved in 2012, we established our position and decided the timing was right to start a commercial masonry business, chasing work with valley’s prominent general contractors,” Chad said. “Earning their business in constructing various retaining wall systems, screen walls, structural masonry, stairwells, elevator shafts and of course stone and brick veneer.”
Between 2013 and 2014, Hirschi expanded into the trucking business due to difficulties in securing third-party delivery of materials to job sites. Initially branded under the same company, it has now developed its own clientele, providing transportation services for block, stone, aggregate, as well as various construction-related materials.
In 2016, they established an ornamental iron business. By bringing this work in-house, they were able to improve quality and performance in their continued effort to exceed clients’ expectations. Chad said the business is another testament to Hirschi’s desire to provide the very best client experience.
“We jumped in head first and decided we were going to fully commit to this,” Chad said. “We started a fabrication shop, which eventually led us to bring powder coating in house. Fast forward now to 2022, and we’ve branched into Arizona, where we now have a masonry business in Phoenix that employs over 200 team members.”
In December, the company celebrated 19 employees who have been with them since the beginning, marking a larger celebration of their 15 years in business. Currently, the combined companies have 800 employees.
Chad maintains their success in building and retaining such strong team members stems from an environment of development and growth from within.
“Our team members are empowered,” Chad said. “We strive to provide pathways that allow for personal development, individual growth and an abundance of opportunities for winners. “Notably, the company has multiple families working together across generations.
“You need many mentors willing to invest time into working with others, alongside dedicated individuals eager to learn and grow,” Chad said. “While some companies prefer a plug-and-play approach, we focus on internal development. It’s common at Hirschi for someone to start as a laborer and work their way up to becoming a skilled mason, foreman, superintendent and even a general superintendent. In fact, one of our general managers has that very story.”
Chad also mentioned their recruitment strategy, which involves targeting college graduates for roles in project engineering, estimating and leadership opportunities within the organization.
“By providing these pathways, we create opportunities for our team members to advance intellectually and financially. Truly becoming skilled professionals,” Chad said.
Crystal describes herself as a big-hearted philanthropist and believes that the key to ending poverty is creating opportunities for others. “The more opportunities we create, the more of a difference we can make,” she added.
“I love the American dream and the idea that anyone can work hard, be dedicated and learn, to achieve their goals,” Crystal said. “I believe college is fantastic for those who desire it, but not every young person finds that to be their path. Many prefer working with their hands, and I love providing that chance. You might start as a laborer, but you have every opportunity to achieve greatness with hard work and dedication and can grow and promote to new roles.”
Chad shared that their company tagline is “Expect More,” which reflects their commitment to providing the best possible client experience. He described their culture as high-energy, performance-driven and a philosophy of exceeding expectations.
“Our core values across all our businesses begin with winning work,” Chad explained. “This means that in the work we do today we must always consider how we will execute to ensure we secure our next project for tomorrow, all as part. The second value is achieving results, which involves setting clear expectations for both the organization and individuals, establishing goals, and measuring their progress to ensure we meet our objectives. “If we commit to something, we need metrics to support our claims. If we commit to something we do it.
“When we win the work, achieve results and provide the best client experience, we are able to be fulfilled,” Chad said. “The concept of fulfillment is a fundamental guiding principle in Hirschi’s core values.”
