Switch Supernap to host cloud customers for San Diego-based firm

San Diego-based Abacus Data Systems recently announced an agreement with Switch Communications to host its cloud services at the Supernap data center in Las Vegas.

“This partnership ensures Abacus Private Cloud customers will continue to enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing their data is safely housed in the most secure and environmentally sustainable facility available,” said Abacus CEO Alessandra Lezama.

Abacus services more than 500,000 clients in the legal, financial and health care organizations. The company offers compliance-ready technology to help ensure an organization meets regulatory standards set under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

This is Abacus’ third partnership with a data center.

Locally, Switch could be the center point to a growing market in the cloud.

“The addition of Abacus Data Systems to the Supernap cloud ecosystem further demonstrates the need for managed private cloud providers to select data centers that support the highest operational and efficiency standards in the industry,” said Switch Executive Vice President of Strategy Adam Kramer. “As hybrid cloud deployments continue to be the bellwether of companies with high compliance needs, true independent technology environments, like Switch Supernap data centers, are the only choice.”

The local Supernap data center serves over 1,000 clients at a more than 2 million-square-foot facility, now powered by 100 percent renewable energy. On top of Las Vegas, Switch has data centers under development in Northern Nevada, Michigan, Italy and Thailand.

Water technology company expands to Nevada

Ionex SG in Davis, California, an environmental engineering firm that researches, designs and develops technologies and products to remove contaminants from drinking water, recently announced a partnership with Las Vegas-based WaterStart — an entity that looks to expand the Nevada economy by supporting innovation in water technology.

“For several years now, our technology has been helping water authorities in California optimize their drinking water resources and minimize hazardous waste during a historic drought,” said Phil Chandler, Ionex’s CEO. “Now, we’re ready to bring the same advantages to communities in neighboring Nevada.”

Under the partnership agreement, Ionex, an environmental engineering business of Britain-based Severn Glocon Group, plans to further develop the control and communications software that defines its ion exchange water treatment technology. Ionex’s technology treats drinking water for contaminants like nitrates, hexavalent chromium, perchlorate and uranium.

Ionex’s journey to Las Vegas, its first outside of California, began with UK Trade and Investment, an entity that helps connect British-based companies with local partners, according to Chandler.

WaterStart, known previously as the Nevada Center of Excellence in Water, is a public-private nonprofit that looks to work with state agencies and organizations that not only grow jobs but diversify the local economy by supporting growth innovative technology in the water sector.

WaterStart formed in 2013 and has partnered with several Nevada entities including the Southern Nevada Water Authority, the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, the Desert Research Institute and the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance.

Law firm helps design educational module to help reduce litigation

Atlanta-based Fisher &Phillips LLP, a law firm with offices in Las Vegas, recently collaborated with Inspired eLearning, a security and compliance training company, in an effort to design a training module that will help employers reduce their risk of potential litigation.

The partnership brought about the design, and recent debut, of a web and mobile-based learning module being dubbed “Human Resources Compliance Training Program.” Employers also have an option to do the program onsite at their location, anywhere in the U.S.

“A single discrimination or wrongful discharge claim can inflict enormous cost on an organization — not only in money, but in time, morale and reputation as well,” said Joseph Ambash, partner at Fisher Phillips. “Inspired eLearning’s Human Resources Compliance series was created in collaboration with our firm to help employers prevent claims before they arise. Effective management training is critical to that effort.”

The human resources module is set to cover several topics, including discrimination, workplace diversity, handling complaints, federal and state wage and hours, bullying and lawful interviewing, according to a recent press release.

All class formats, onsite and web options, are taught by a practicing attorney from Fisher &Phillips. Bulk pricing is available.

There are also a group of modules in the pipeline. Inspired eLearning collaborated with Fisher &Phillips to cover other topics such as workplace violence, active shooter, lawful hiring, disabilities and accommodations, lawful termination, drug-free workplace policies and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
