WGU Nevada, Latin Chamber offer scholarships

In collaboration with the Latin Chamber of Commerce, WGU Nevada is offering more than $30,000 in scholarships to members of the chamber. The WGU Nevada Otto Merida Scholarship was created in honor of the founder and chief executive officer of the Latin Chamber of Commerce. The scholarships, valued at up to $3,200 per student, will be applied at the rate of $800 per six-month term, renewable for up to four terms. Scholarships are available to new students looking to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree in any of WGU Nevada’s more than 50 degree programs in information technology, business, teacher education, or healthcare. Potential recipients must be a member of the chamber, or work for a member company. To be considered for one of the Otto Merida Scholarships, prospective students must be officially admitted to WGU Nevada and submit a scholarship application by Jan. 31. Scholarships will be awarded based on an applicant’s academic record, financial need, readiness for online study at WGU Nevada and current competency. WGU Nevada uses an innovative approach to learning called competency-based education, which measures learning rather than time spent in class. Students earn their degrees by mastering the subjects they need to know to be successful, while faculty members work with the students as mentors, offering guidance, support and individualized instruction.

Sands Cares donates $100k to five charities

Sands Cares, the global corporate citizenship program of Las Vegas Sands, has for the second year donated a total of $100,000 to five nonprofit organizations serving the community. The Sands Give-Back Bank is a charitable initiative that enables team members at the Venetian, the Palazzo and Sands Expo Convention Center to determine where the company allocates a bank of charitable funds. Team members voted to allocate funds among five local non-profit organizations serving a range of Nevada residents in need, including those suffering from abuse, hunger and homelessness. The organizations were HELP of Southern Nevada, The Shade Tree/Noah’s Animal House, Communities in Schools of Nevada, Three Square and U.S. Vets, Las Vegas. After more than 3,000 votes were cast in November, Las Vegas Sands made contributions to each of the charities based on the percentage of votes received. Each organization received a base amount of $10,000 and the remaining $50,000 was allocated based on team member votes.
