United Way of Southern Nevada launches money management program for students

Piggy bank teaches financial literacy

Howard E. Hollingsworth Elementary School students saved more than $600 through United Way of Southern Nevada’s recent launch of its second Piggy Bank program.

The financial literacy program is designed to teach students how to save money by simulating a traditional banking experience and by providing financial education in the classroom.

“Our Young Philanthropists Society members funded this innovative, real-world solution to help children learn how to save,” said Cass Palmer, president and CEO of United Way of Southern Nevada. “We are helping students to be successful in life by teaching them from an early age the importance of having a savings account and basic life skills that will help them make smart financial decisions.”

Through programs like the Piggy Bank, United Way works to increase the financial success of the community by building a solid foundation for families and individuals to obtain economic independence.

From its 2012 opening to date, more than $61,500 was saved by Walter Bracken STEAM Academy students through the first Piggy Bank program spearheaded by YPS.
