Kindred enlarges footprint, care model

Kindred Healthcare Inc. will open its 160-bed transitional center late in the fourth quarter, offering southwestern valley residents another care option.

The center will be near the corner of Russell Road and Rainbow Boulevard, adjacent to Spring Valley Hospital.

“I think the key thing with Kindred is that we want to be a community partner,” said Cyndi Taplin, district vice president of operations for Kindred Healthcare Inc.’s Red Rock District. “We’ve tried to provide a little more geographical options for patients here in the Las Vegas Valley.”

The short-term subacute facility will be Kindred’s fourth local transitional care hospital. The other three are scattered valleywide: one is near Decatur Boulevard and Sahara Avenue; one is near Eastern Avenue and Flamingo Road; one is inside St. Rose Dominican Hospital’s Rose De Lima Campus.

Kindred also has a hospital-based subacute unit, co-located with Kindred’s East Side transitional hospital, an outpatient wound clinic, along with two hospice plus home care and private duty locations.

The new transitional center will prepare patients for their hospital release by offering short-term rehabilitation therapy for the heart and lungs, along with orthopedic rehabilitation.

“It basically is providing that bridge from hospital to home for those patients who need more skilled nursing in a rehab focus. It helps them get ready to go home and be safe there,” Taplin said.

Kindred expanded its locations and its network. It agreed to become a partner and owner with Silver State Accountable Care Organization LLC. With the Silver State partnership, Kindred becomes part of a network of 150 physicians in the valley.

Silver State became an accountable care organization in 2014 after forming in 2013. Accountable care organizations receive Medicare payments under the shared-savings structure, a strategy to reduce Medicare costs under health care reform.

“The benefit of having Kindred be the partner is that we have multiple levels of care here in the Las Vegas market,” Taplin said. “We have everything from skilled nursing and transitional care rehab to specialty hospitals and home health and hospice.”
